Refuge In Your Bedroom

metal bedroom furniture

There is perhaps no other room in any home that is as important or as used as the bedroom. The bedroom is our own personal refuge when we have had a hard day. A bedroom gives us the perfect opportunity to lie back, relax and read our favorite novel or newspaper. Maybe that is the reason we often spend so much time deciding on what we put into this one room.

Our interest with bedrooms is evident right from the start. When we go looking for a flat or a home of our own, one of the first things we ask is how many bedrooms are available within the property. Usually, the more bedrooms, the more you will spend on rent or on a mortgage. Of course, we also show concern with the size of those bedrooms. The larger a bedroom, the more personal space we will end up with.

Once we have that bedroom of our very own, then we go looking for some bedroom furniture. Finding bedroom furniture can be fun, but we always want something in our personal refuge that is comfortable and is a direct display of our personality and tastes. Of courese there are beds, dressers, armoires, and various other pieces of furniture specifically designed for the bedroom.

Speaking of furniture, let’s talk materials. There are a great many materials that can be used and often found in a bedroom. You may find that there is wood, metal, plastic or even paper. Each type of material has its own benefits. Sometimes, all of the furniture will match, but other times, a bedroom is a mix-matched collage of favored pieces gathered over time. Choosing bedroom furniture really comes down to picking the option best suited to your individual taste and needs.

Bedroom decor is another aspect of our bedroom where you can add that personal touch. Do you have flowers decorating your room? Do you have sports cars decorating your room? Maybe you even have fairies and princesses. No matter what the decor, you can tell a lot about the occupants of a bedroom simply by checking out the bedroom wall paper or other decorations. More often than not, the first thing you can tell by the decor is the age of the occupants and the second thing that is usually obvious, is the gender of the person.

The amount of money you spend on your bedroom is evident in many ways via the furniture and decorations of that bedroom. Having a mixed collection of expensive and inexpensive furniture and decorations is a great way to have a cost effective bedroom that can look great, without the added expense. For the more affluent, there are actually bedroom designers that can help make your bedroom the resting place that is best suited to you.

Bedroom furniture is often so cherished you may even find and decide to buy antique bedroom decorations and or furniture. Why? Because antique bedroom furniture is often sturdy and built to last. You will find that there are many options when you start looking for a way to decorate your bedroom to suit your taste.

One tip when planning and decorting your first bedroom is to stick to just painted walls. This will allow to change the appearance simply by adding a new coat of paint. Add in some pictures of your choice and you will soon be well on your way to creating your very own place of refuge.

Beauty School for your Bedroom Furniture

Bedroom Furniture

I was at a friend’s apartment when I noticed just how, well, pretty her bed was. What happened? That thing used to be an ugly piece of mangled wood that resembled a cat scratching post. And it was always uncomfortable to sit on, much less lie down on. Actually, the whole room looked kind of bad. I mean, one of the dresser drawers was completely missing, and another was stuck most of the time. In short, the bedroom was a complete mess. How did you do it, I asked. She told me her refurbishing secrets, which I am now passing on to you.

First, she told me she replaced the number one bedroom furniture priority: the bed. She opted to upgrade her bedroom with contemporary furniture and bought a platform bed. They are low-profile, meaning they only rise about three or four inches off the ground, and don’t need a box spring, which save her about five hundred bucks. I hadn’t even thought about a platform bed before. It looks much sleeker and sophisticated than her old bed, and she used the money she saved not having to buy a box spring on two new nightstands that match the platform bed.

Next, she started looking around for a new mattress. Her chiropractor was sick of seeing her, I guess. She said she looked for one with an inner material made of foam, since she’s so allergic to a lot of synthetic stuff. They’re kind of expensive in my opinion, but she says it’s totally worth the money. She also found some organic cotton sheets that she said helped improve her sleep tremendously. Plus, they’re eco-friendly, so now she’s green while she sleeps.

Lastly, she said the dresser had to go (finally, she learned). She bought another dresser in the same color as the bed, but not from the same collection. I know what you’re thinking—why wouldn’t she just buy the entire bedroom set? She’s kind of quirky and likes things to mismatch ever so slightly. So she ended up with a three-drawer dresser that looks very similar to her new platform bed and nightstands, but isn’t. Go figure.

And while she was buying, she ended up picking up some closet organizers and a new mirror so she can store her massive collection of jeans and try them on before going out. Smart move, sister, smart move.

Why French Design Is Perfect For Your Bedroom

classic bedroom furniture

In the world of interior design there is constant change of evolution and style, the latest craze in bedroom design is the French decoration style. There is little more romantic that a room with a luxurious French bed and accompanying stylish fittings. Not only will a French bed bring an air of romance to your bedroom but is a brilliant way to revitalise a tired looking room into one of sophistication and elegance.

Most French decor has a concurrent colour throughout, from the bed to the walls. These colours are usually light blue, shades of green and even gold although peaches, pinks and lilacs are becoming increasingly popular.

As long as the shade of colour matches the whitewashed furniture and adds to the distressed look the choice is yours, there is no need to stand on ceremony. Another great French design feature is to contrast the walls and soft furnishings with the bed, wardrobe and chest of drawers. Paint is not a prerequisite, French interior design regularly uses soft wallpaper patterns to compliment other fixtures in the room.

The bed is of course the most important aspect of any bedroom; for that distinctive French feel it is worth getting a rococo style bed with a plush, thick mattress and comfortable oversized pillows. The bed frame can be made of antique wood and should have a distressed look to it; ornate carvings are typical in paisley patterns and floral designs. The French love luxuries so do not scrimp on the sheets, plenty of linen in brilliant white or lace gives a simplistic clean look to your bed.

Added to the bed, other pieces of furniture should be oversized when trying to achieve the French look. A huge wardrobe combined with a chest of drawers should be in place while a dresser adds luxury if you have the space. If you have a large bedroom it is even worth adding a comfortable armchair or settee as well as other antiques made from wrought iron.

French bedroom design emphasises the window as a focal point of the room away from the bed. The use of long, flowing drapes tied back to frame the vista creates a stunning effect. Keeping the window clear is also vital in letting large amounts of light into the room, making it as light and airy as possible. Curtains should extend all the way down from the ceiling to the floor, adding a sense of height to the room and that luxurious French feel.

A hand painted screen near the bed can also create this sense of height and makes an outstanding design feature. It can also be placed in the corner to soften the edges of the bedroom and add a feeling of comfort. It can also add a romantic centrepiece allowing lovers to undress behind it in a seductive way, after all romance is a vital part of any French bedroom. Other accessories should include porcelain or pieces of artwork that are typically French and will help add to the look more generally.

In terms of lighting Tiffany lamps placed close to the bed are a brilliant way to recreate Art Nouveau style within your room. This classic elegance is easy to achieve and adds soft lighting to emphasise the romantic nature of your new French bedroom. A chandelier is also an advisable lighting solution if your room is large enough and can carry such a large light fitting. Candle holders are also ideal for adding romance and decoration for cosy nights in.

When considering your new French bedroom, remember to always follow your own taste. Thankfully it does not have to be an expensive look to achieve, even when considering the initial outlay of the bed. For a bedroom that is certain to bring romance and relaxation, the French style is the perfect solution.

oak bedroom furniture

Solid wood furniture is always in style as it is versatile and easy to craft. But this does not mean that all woods are created equal.

There are different types of woods used to craft furniture such as bedroom furniture sets. Exotic woods such as teak and mahogany fall under this category. These woods are very beautiful and lend a classical look to furniture. A bedroom furnished with teak bedroom furniture set looks elegant and expensive. Usually, pieces of furniture made from hardwoods are expensive.

Wood that goes into making solid wood furniture us distinguished as either a hardwood or softwood. This classification is not made based on the strength of the wood but rather on the behavior of the wood in the forest. Hardwood trees lose their leaves seasonally, while softwood trees keep their leaves all year.

All pieces of furniture used in the home from dressers, to table, cabinets are chairs, can be fashioned from the different types of woods. However, even pieces of furniture made from these materials can be bought for less from a furniture outlet. The prices available at a furniture outlet are around 20 per cent less than what is available in retail stores.

Softwood furniture is an attractive and alternative solution. They are very pliable and therefore can be used to create several different pieces of furniture. However, a problem with softwood furniture is that it is not very long lasting. It needs to be replaced every few years.

Families who cannot afford solid wood furniture but like the appearance of wooden furniture can opt for inexpensive, mass-produced furniture made from composites such as plywood, particle board and pressed wood. Unlike solid wood, these woods won’t shrink and expand. However, they also don’t offer the durability and grainy texture that consumers are looking for when they buy solid wood furniture.

How to Get What You Want in the Bedroom

oak bedroom furniture

It’s hard to feel romantic if you’re sleeping on a second-hand mattress and have no bed frame, let alone a real bed. Being a young person in love often means having to settle for less than stellar furniture (and myriad other issues that come with being a money-less, goal-less twenty-something) Here are, in no particular order, the top three ways to improve your bedroom style and avoid sleeping on the sofa. Alone.

1. Know your style. This may seem simple enough, but note that ‘your’ is also plural. You need to know what works for you AND your partner together. That is the point, after all, correct? If you love contemporary and your trusty sidekick is a traditionalist at heart, heads will butt. Sleek lines and darker finishes paired with ornate detailing and a canopy bed may not gel well together. Research, research, research and find something that suits you mutually. Perhaps you can compromise and purchase a platform bed in an oak finish or a poster bed with a dark espresso finish. A relationship will blossom if you introduce your two styles: classic, meet contemporary; contemporary, meet classic.

2. Know your quantity. Do you like a more sparsely filled room, or do you like the look of a lot of matching pieces? You can choose bedroom furniture sets that come with any or all beds, chests of drawers, armoires, nightstands, and mirrors. If closet space is minimal, choosing a set with an armoire just makes good sense and will reduce unnecessary “your space; my space” fights. With two people, there are instantly two sides of the bed and therefore two bedside tables are compulsory. Be sure that you get enough bedroom furniture for both of you. You’re a team now. There’s no “I” in team.

3. Know your budget. If you are sleeping on a hand-me-down mattress, you likely already do know your budget, but it’s also important to look at this new bedroom set as an investment, not unlike your relationship. Put in a little, get a little. Put in a little more effort, get a lot. Buying a quality bedroom set can last until your silver anniversary. Your relationship won’t unless you buck up and fill your bedroom with stylish, romantic bedroom furniture. Give each other a reason to want to head to the bedroom again.

Shopping For New Bedroom Furniture

Bedroom Furniture

Looking to add a little pizzazz to your bedroom? Is the furniture in your bedroom a bit dingy, perhaps ready to be sold off to the antique store down the road? Many people become so accustomed to their old bedroom furniture they forget the about the first time they walked into their bedroom to see their new furniture waiting to join them in a good night’s sleep. It’s an exhilarating feeling lying on a brand new king size bed, or putting the first glass of water on a brand new bedside cabinet.

While one may need to actually test out new mattress to find that perfect fit, like a good picture, every comfortable mattress deserves a unique, stylish bed frame to accent the other features of the bedroom. Perhaps your grandmother gave you a bedside cabinet and you need a perfect bed to compliment this family heirloom. Perhaps you are tired of sleeping on a divan bed you have had for 10 years & are ready to add some class to your bedroom with a bit of decent furniture.

There are many factors in considering a new bed for your bedroom. There may be style considerations, size considerations, and price to consider while shopping for a bed. Everyone wants the most elegance for their money, but functional considerations are important! Perhaps you have a pile of linen stuffed in your wardrobe with nowhere to go. A storage bed might be the perfect solution. A storage bed combines a mattress frame with a chest of drawers or a lift up mattress base and is the perfect solution for keeping your bedroom linen and anything else you need to store in your bedroom perfectly organized.

While choosing new bedroom furniture, you may want to consider a king size bed. Be sure to measure your bedroom first and make sure you have enough space between your new king size bed and the walls and furniture of your bedroom. A good 36 inches is required for walking space, and make sure your bed fits in proportion to the walls of your bedroom. King size beds are usually 160cm wide and 210cm long at least, depending on the bed, & super king beds are even bigger at 190cm wide x 200cm long.  And don’t forget, good Feng Shui practices would have you put your headboard against a wall, allowing to wake up and get out of either side of the bed.

Then there are the bedside cabinets. Will you want one on each side of the bed? Many people just buy one, but that isn’t terribly practical if there are two of you in the bed, & you each want somewhere to put your books, alarm clocks etc. Sometimes it’s better to have a smaller bed & allow enough room for the furniture rather than fill the whole room with a bed & have nowhere to put anything.

Finally don’t forget your chest of drawers. Ideally it should match either your bed, or your bedside cabinets, or maybe even both.  Drawers need to be roomy, yet sturdy enough to hold plenty of clothing. Of all of the furniture items in a bedroom these get the hardest time, after all, we all have these stuffed to the brim, especially in winter when storing knitwear, jeans, heavy socks etc.

If choosing modern style bedroom furniture you will need to be aware that many of the new chests of drawers are quite long & low, & may not have enough room for everything.  They look great in large Italian rooms, but in our small UK bedrooms might not quite be large enough. In this instance it might be a good idea to buy two tall chests & put the side by side. Look at the room you think you need & then double it to find the chest of drawers you need.

Beautiful bedroom furniture in modern styles can be found online at Go Modern, who sell bedside cabinets & chests of drawers in lacquer & wood.
