Whenever you start the process of shopping for furniture, it can become time-consuming, wasting energy and effort over the simple decision of choosing pieces that match your personality and taste. If you’re in the market for a new bed, don’t fret—there are plenty of options to choose from. Generally speaking, whether or not you like a classic take or a modern one on bedroom furniture, you will probably enjoy a platform bed, a sleigh bed, or a canopy bed the most.
“http://www.eco-furniture.com/bedroom-furniture/platform-beds.php”>Platform beds are the best way to contemporize your bedroom furniture without going over your budget. These low-profile beds give off an Asian or European vibe with their sleek lines and modern chic. Because the bed is so minimal in its design, its unadorned headboard blends into its surroundings. Despite the understated sophisticated of a “http://www.eco-furniture.com/bedroom-furniture/platform-beds.php”>platform bed, they are money savers because they don’t need a box spring for your mattress. Instead, slats run across the width of the bed, effortlessly supporting the mattress.
Sleigh beds are ideal for someone who wants a touch of modern bedroom furniture while still keeping aligned with more traditional fare. Created during the Empire period, sleigh beds were originally designed with elaborate detail work and scrolling on the headboard. Newer sleigh beds are a bit more pared down, with headboards and feet with less design, making them a great match to nearly any bedroom décor.
Canopy beds exude traditional style and elegance; if you love the look of time-honored four posters, the canopy bed is the best fit for you. First used in the 1400s in Europe, the canopy bed has grown throughout the centuries into a more delicately decorative piece of bedroom furniture. Oftentimes they will come with top enclosures so you can hang your favorite fabrics on the sides. Today, canopy beds range from overly ornate to a more contemporary look.

A sleigh bed has long been regarded as a rather exotic piece of furniture and in some places, it is rather unheard of to have one in the bedroom. Perhaps it’s the cost and the perceived luxury value attached to it or maybe a person who is not familiar with interior design and furnishing will imagine that this piece of furniture belongs solely in the North Pole. Although this is a rather amusing thought, the fact is that a sleigh bed DOES look like Father Christmas’ most preferred vehicle. If you ran your fingers along its ornately carved structure, you will eventually reach the pinnacle of a sleigh bed’s design — its curvy top upon the headboard that is turned either inwards or outwards.
Although the sleigh bed bears historical evidence that it was inspired by the noble French people, it was in America that it became wildly popular in the early 19th century. Interestingly one can also see remnants of the ancient Roman designs on sleigh beds even in the modern world. Traditionally, sleigh beds were carved from deep mahogany wood but today, more contemporary versions are available in the US and other European countries where sleigh beds are no longer considered an opulent form of furniture due to highly competitive prices offered by manufacturers. This meant that more people can afford to enjoy the charm and novelty that come with a sleigh bed!
In the olden days, sleigh beds that bear equally high headboards and footboards are commonplace but now, modern versions have emerged with a slew of diversified designs. If you don’t want an old fashioned sleigh bed to adorn your bedroom, you can choose to purchase one with a lower footboard minus the elaborate curl on the headboard. Perusing a furniture store or catalog, one can find sleigh beds fashioned from cherry wood, light rattan, solid iron and even plush leather. Fully upholstered sleigh beds are also a desired addition to a bedroom but they may cost a little more than your average model.
If you are thinking of replacing your old bed with a sleigh bed, or even thinking of sprucing up a new home with one, find out your room’s measurement before putting down money to purchase a sleigh bed. A sleigh bed can be very bulky depending on the design and while a large room can easily accommodate a Queen or even a King-sized bed, you might have to choose a slightly more compact model minus the intricate outward curls for a smaller room. Remember, unlike conventional beds, a sleigh bed’s headboard will go lean completely flat against the wall so do think about this issue before you rush out to the furniture store with your credit card!

There is no doubt that the bedroom is a sanctuary to many of us. We spend roughly a third of our lives in the bedroom. We sleep there, enjoy quality family time, and relax after a hard day’s work. Therefore it is necessary to ensure that our bedrooms are comfortable at all times.
Decorating the bedroom may not as easy as it may sound. It entails more than just deciding on a bed and dressers. It requires attention to every small detail such as:
- The dimensions of your bedroom,
- Your budget,
- The size of the mattresses,
- The width of the headboard,
- And the overall style that you want to achieve.
It is also important to consider other pieces you may want to include in your bedroom such as Armoires, Nightstands, Mirrors, etc. If you are going to accentuate your bedroom with pieces such as these, it may be a good idea to purchase them as a set since each piece will compliment each other and provide a sense of consistency in your bedroom furnishings. You also may be able to save money by buying a set all at once instead of a piece at a time.
As noted above, major considerations to take into account when decorating your bedroom are the dimensions of the room, and the size of mattress. If you are decorating for a child’s or teen’s bedroom, consider a smaller mattress such as a Twin (otherwise known as a Single) which generally are 39 inches wide by 75 inches long. You may also want to consider a Double (or Full) mattress if you desire extra space. Double-sized mattresses are 54 inches wide by 75 inches long.
However, if you are looking to decorate the bedroom for an adult, you may want the extra sleeping space and decide to go with a Queen or King-sized mattress. Queens are 60 inches wide by 80 inches long. Kings are generally 72 inches by 84 inches.
When decorating the bedroom, consider the different types of beds as well:
Sleigh Beds:
- Sleigh beds are characterized by elegant, curving lines and a distinctive, romantic feel. Because the style is so eye-catching, there are some things to consider. For example, the height of a wood sleigh headboard determines how prominent the bed will be in the context of the room
Four-Poster Beds:
- Four-Poster beds are characterized by four posts at each corner; they can be of equal or varying height and can be tall or short (short being defined as the post being 3 feet high or shorter). A pencil bed is a type of four-poster, named for its tall, thin, tapered posts.
Canopy Beds:
- A Canopy bed is essentially the same as a Four-poster bed, but with a draped covering. It is a popular choice due to its elegant and warm feeling, accentuated by linens and drapes overbearing the top of the bed.
Platform Beds:
- Platform beds are very simple in form, utilizing simple lines and are usually simple, rectangular bed frames, close to the ground. They commonly use a modern or contemporary design. Since the bed is generally not as high as a standard bed, using a platform bed as the focal point will make the room appear larger and more spacious.
Panel Beds:
- Panel beds have headboards and footboards that are usually all of one piece, without spindles or slats, and are straight up and down, so that they can stand flat against the wall.
Another important aspect to consider is the material(s) of a bed. In determining the feel of your bedroom, the materials that make up your bed go a long way. For a warm and romantic feel, consider decorating your bedroom with wooden furniture with accents and intricate designs. For a simple and contemporary feel, perhaps bedroom furniture made of metals and alloys would be a good solution.
Decorating the bedroom is never an easy task. I hope this article has provided you with valuable insights which will help make decorating your bedroom a simple and fun experience.
